WishList Member Quick Start

Getting started is an exciting time. Once you take that first step, momentum starts to build. Each membership site is different, but there are a number of typical options and settings you can use to get rolling towards your goals. The WishList Member Quick Start Guide is below and ready to help.

This article has been created as a “Quick Start” for using WishList Member to get your membership site up and running. It will cover a range of topics that begins with installing and activating the WishList Member plugin while also touching on several useful settings and features you can use to quickly put your plans into action.

You can walk through this process at your own pace to create your own membership site.

Lets jump right in…

Step 1: Installing WishList Member

You can get started by downloading WishList Member and installing it on your WordPress site. Then you just need to activate the plugin using your license key and you're all set. This is an easy process and your first step towards your new site.

Check Out: Installing WishList Member

Step 2: WishList Member Dashboard

Once you have installed and activated the plugin, you can check out the WishList Member Dashboard. That is where you will find vital information at a glance. This includes membership stats, your license info, the Membership Success Checklist (more on this helpful tool can be found in Step 3 and Step 4), and more.

Check Out: WishList Member Dashboard

Step 3: WishList Member Setup Wizard

Now you can use the Setup Wizard. This is another time-saving item in your membership tool belt. It will guide you down the path of site setup and explains each step along the way. Running through the Setup Wizard can be done in only a few minutes and you'll be shown a checklist you can use to visually see what you have created (and anything else left to complete at your own pace).

Check Out: WishList Member Setup Wizard

Step 4: Membership Success Checklist

Checking items off a list leads to a feeling of accomplishment and it's encouraging when a task gets done. That is part of the thought process that went into creating the Membership Success Checklist. It includes a number of helpful prompts (with links to support articles and videos). You will notice the checklist displayed on the WishList Member Dashboard and will see how quickly you can knock items off the list.

Step 5: Create a Membership Level

A membership level is a very effective method to protect content. You can allow specific members to access that protected content based on their membership levels. This gives you the ability to control access and set any content to be “Members Only” with only a few clicks.

Check Out: Create a Membership Level

Step 6: Create a Welcome Page – After Registration

The first page a new member sees once they have signed up is the Member Welcome page. This is an opportunity to “wow” your members and reinforce their decision to join your community. You can welcome members and provide them with easy access to any content or areas they will want to check out right away.

Check Out: Create a Welcome Page – After Registration

Step 7: Create a Member Dashboard Page – After Login

You can create a Member Dashboard and have it appear to members each time they login. This makes it easy for the member to always be able to find what they are looking for and feel at home. A comfortable member is a happy member.

Check Out: Create a Member Dashboard Page – After Login

Step 8: Create Membership Content

Creating exclusive content for your members. This is an area where you can really flex those creative muscles. You have the content your members want so it should be easy for you to add it to your site. WishList Member can be trusted to handle the protection and access for your pages, posts, categories, comments, custom post types, etc.

Check Out: Create Membership Content

Step 9: Create a Sales / Offer Page

You may offer a free or paid membership (or both). Either way you slice it, WishList Member has you covered. A page can be included on your site that describes and presents your offer. This is used to entice and attract new members to join your site.

Check Out: Create a Sales / Offer Page

Step 10: Member Login Options

You've created your membership levels and your site includes exclusive content for your members. Now you just need to allow members to login. You can use any WordPress or WishList Member login option to allow members to easily sign in. This includes the ability to customize the standard WordPress login page so it matches the look and feel of your site.

Check Out: Member Login Options

Step 11: Courses, Quizzes, Points and Badges

Engaging your members (and letting them engage with each other) is an effective way to entice members to stick around. This can be done by adding interactive and encouraging elements to your site like a system for members to earn and spend points. You could also offer a selection of badges members can collect based on actions and achievements within the community. You can provide your members with a course that concludes with a quiz to open up a special members-only bonus when they achieve a specific score. These options and so much more are possible when using CourseCure with WishList Member.

Check Out: CourseCure – General Overview

Bonus Step: Manage Members

There are a variety of options available to you when it comes to managing members within your site. You can adjust protection and access for multiple groups of members at once or you can make changes to a single member. You have total control as the site Admin in the Members section of WishList Member. A quick search or advanced search can be used at any time to view and sort through your list of members.

Check Out: Manage Member

Keep the Ball Rolling

Using the above WishList Member Quick Start Guide is a great way to get started with your membership site. You can keep the momentum going by adding more content and fine tuning things as you move forward. You have a number of options available to make the user experience a pleasant and rewarding one for your community. To your success!

Paid Registration for membership - WishList Member

Allowing users to pay for access to your protected content can be a smooth process. Once someone has made the decision to join, they can become a member right away. There are a number of payment options within WishList Member you can use to accept a paid registration for a membership.

So the user can pay and become a member with the correct access.

In this case, we are looking into how you can create a membership sales page for a PAID membership level. This means anyone interested in joining would just need to pay the price you have set. As a quick note, if you’re interested in creating a registration page for free users, you can get details on that right here.

Using a Payment Button / Payment Link

Each payment provider handles the processing of payments a bit differently. This depends on how they have chosen to take care of the sending and receiving of funds online. With that being said, setting up a payment provider integration with WishList Member will result in a payment button or payment link that can be used by a user to begin the purchase / registration process.

So all you need to do is integrate a membership level with a payment provider and you'll have your payment button or link. You can then insert the payment button or link onto your sales page. This will allow anyone who clicks the button or link to pay and register for the level and gain access right away.

Your sales page will include your offer. This should explain the benefits of what members will receive or gain access to when they join. You can provide details on what you offer entails and why it can help them. This is where you can detail what your members will receive as a part of your membership site.

The screenshot below doesn't include a fully written offer as it is just an example. It shows an example payment button inserted into the page.

Paid Registration for membership - WishList Member

You can create a payment button for each level you want to sell. A paid registration for a membership can be created for any of your levels in the Setup > Integrations > Payment Providers section of WishList Member.

Users Can Purchase and Register on the Live Site

Once you have inserted the button (or link), it will appear on the page on the live site. A user simply needs to click it to begin the purchase and registration process. They will become a member with corresponding access once they complete that process.

The screenshot below shows a button appearing on the page on the live site.

You can use this method to allow anyone to purchase access to a membership level and your members will be able to quickly and easily join your membership.

Free Registration for membership - WishList Member

You are going to have people who want to join your membership (and that's a really good thing). So you'll want a page they can use to quickly and easily join. WishList Member can certainly help with this.

Both “quick” and “easy” are key terms when someone is registering online. If the process is tricky or difficult, it can result in abandoned registrations. So let's keep it as simple as possible.

In this case, we are looking into how you can provide a registration page for a FREE membership level. This means anyone can sign up for access at no cost. As a quick note, if you're interested in creating a registration page for paid users, you can get details on that right here.

Using the WishList Member Registration Shortcode

A quick way to create a registration page for a free membership level is by using the registration shortcode provided by WishList Member.

You can insert the registration shortcode for the desired membership level onto your registration page for free users and it will automatically display a registration form on that page.

As an example, lets say you had a membership level named Platinum and wanted to allow users to register to that level for free.

The shortcode would be the following:

[wlm_register “Platinum”]

You'll notice the name of the membership level appears within the shortcode. The screenshot below shows the shortcode inserted into a page.

Free Registration for membership - WishList Member

You can replace that level name with the name of a different level if you wanted to display a registration form for another level. (More details on registration form shortcodes can be found right here).

Users Can Register on the Live Site

Once you have inserted the registration shortcode, the registration form will appear on the page on the live site. A user simply needs to fill in the fields on the registration form and they will become a member with corresponding access once they click the submit button.

The screenshot below shows the registration form appearing on the page on the live site.

Free Registration for membership - WishList Member

That is all there is to it. You can allow anyone to sign up for a membership level for free using the registration shortcode. Your members will be able to join your membership with ease.

For example, the “Activate License Key” item will appear in the Finished section if you have activated WishList Member with your license key. If you haven't activated your license key yet, that item will appear in the Start Here category.

There are three categories for the items.

  • Start Here. These items have not been finished. These items can be checked off when finished or skipped if you want to do them later or if they aren't necessary for your particular site.
  • Finished. These items have been finished. They have either been manually checked off or automatically checked off when the task was finished on the site.
  • Skipped. These items have been skipped. They have been manually skipped and placed on the bottom of the checklist. Skipped items can also be restored. Restoring an item will place it back into it's previous category.

There are 4 icons that can appear for items on the checklist.

  • More Info (i Icon) This will direct you to documentation with additional information regarding the item.
  • Configure (Gear Icon) This will direct you to the area to configure this item further.

  • Restore (Up Arrow Icon) This will restore a skipped item and will place it back in its previous category. This icon appears when you mouse over the item.

Examples

You can click on the item or the gear icon to further configure that specific item. It will direct you to that specific section in WishList Member.

The letter i icon can be used to learn more about the item. It will direct you to documentation related to the item.

Some items will be checked off automatically when complete. Examples include activating WishList Member with your license key or creating a membership level. Completing the action of activating the license key or creating a membership level will check those items off the Start Here section and adds them to the Finished section.

Other items can be checked off manually by clicking the box beside it. Checking off an item will move it to the Finished section of the checklist.

creating membership content

So, you're thinking about creating membership content. You're definitely in the right place so let's jump right in and get started.

WordPress pages and posts are a popular method used to create content. They are a tried and tested way to present your content to your audience.

Adding WishList Member into the mix opens up even more possibilities. WishList Member is used to easily protect and set access for that content.

An effective pairing of systems that results in you being able to control who can access your content.

Pages and Posts

The two main types of WordPress content are pages and posts. While they can display content in similar ways, there are differences between the two when creating membership content.

Pages

Pages are typically used for content that will be less timely and can remain more “evergreen”. Examples can include a contact us page or your sales page.

WordPress Pages Example

You are able to set pages to appear (or not appear) in the menu of your site. A WordPress page can also be set as a welcome page or a dashboard page for members.

Pages don't usually include a comments section (although you can enable comments on a page if you want).

Posts

Posts are typically used for content you want to post on a schedule or in a collection. Examples include a 4 part weekly series or a group of content related to a topic.

WordPress Posts Example

You can set posts within a category and can list them on your site. This allows users to easily check out the related content.

Posts are generally used more often if you would like a comments section for a piece of content. That said, you can also disable comments for posts as well.

Access and Protection

Once you have created your content, you can set the access and protection using WishList Member. This is what will control who can view your Members Only content.

You can select if the content is protected or not and then select which membership level(s) are allowed to access the protected pieces of content. It's a quick and easy process.

More details are available in the Access and Protection article.

You can create membership content at any time and select who can view it in just a few steps. This allows you to control the access and protection for your site.

Member Login Options - WishList Member

Users can login to your site using any WishList Member or WordPress login option.

This means you can use any of the available WishList Member login methods like the login form mergecode or customizing the WordPress login page. You can also use any of the standard WordPress login options or plugins.

You can even use a combination of multiple options. Basically, any login method can be used to allow your users to login to your site.

In this article, we are going to run through a couple popular methods for logging in.

These include:

WordPress Login Page – Custom Styling

Let's start with a twist on a classic.

All WordPress sites include a default URL to allow for login. You can view the WordPress login form for your site by adding /wp-admin or /wp-login.php to the end of the site URL.

Example:

wlptest.com/wp-login.php

wlptest.com/wp-admin

This displays a login form that is functional, but it's appearance is fairly basic and displays the WordPress logo.

Member Login Options - WishList Member

Ideally, this login page could match more with the look and feel of your site and include your site logo.

This is where the twist comes in with WishList Member.

You can customize the appearance of the default WordPress login page in the Advanced Options > Logins > Styling section of WishList Member.

This allows you to select from a variety of templates and make any edits you would like. This can include changing the images, selecting your own colours and adding your own logo.

Once you're done, you will have a customized login form.

Member Login Options - WishList Member

The screenshot example below shows the WordPress Login Page with a template applied. The same login functionality remains, but the appearance has been styled (a background image, new logo, etc.) based on the template used.

Member Login Options - WishList Member

More details are available in the WordPress Login Form – Custom Styling article.

WishList Member Login Form Mergecode

WishList Member includes an option that allows you to easily insert a login form into any page or post.

This is handled by the login form mergecode. You can simply add that login mergecode to any area on a page or post and the site will automatically display the WishList Member login form.

The login form mergecode is available in a couple of formats.

  • Standard Login Form Mergecode:
    [wlm_loginform]
  • Login Form Mergecode with Ajax error message option:
    [wlm_loginform ajax_login=1]

Both formats will display the same login form on the site as shown in the screenshot below.

Member Login Options - WishList Member

But the error message / redirect that occurs when a failed login attempt happens is different for the two login form mergecode formats.

[wlm_loginform] If the standard login form mergecode option is used, the user will be redirected to the WordPress login page if their login attempt fails.

If you have customized the WordPress login page using the custom styling method noted above, the user will see the styled version of that page. If not, they will see the standard looking WordPress login page.

Custom Styled WordPress Login Page
Standard WordPress Login Page

[wlm_loginform ajax_login=1] If the Login Form Mergecode with Ajax error message option is used, the user will remain on the same login page and will see the error message above the form if their login attempt fails.

More details (including the methods to insert the mergecode) are available in the Login Form Mergecode article. As mentioned, you can use any WishList Member or WordPress login option (or a combination of options).

The important stuff at their fingertips. That is a useful way to greet members each time they login. Presenting members with what they need as soon as they enter will save them time and effort.

WishList Member includes an After Login page.

This means each time a member logs into the site, they are shown the set After Login page.

There is a basic message applied as the default After Login page. You also have the option to customize that experience for your members. You could create a more detailed member dashboard experience for your members.

A member dashboard page that quickly provides information and potential next steps for your members.

After Login Page Overview

As noted, the After Login page will appear to a member right after they login and it will be seen every time after login.

A Global Default After Login page can be set or individual After Login pages can be set for each membership level.

Additional options and settings related to configuring the After Login page are available in the After Login Page article.

In this article, we will focus on the type of information you can include on a member dashboard page when setting it as the After Login page.

Two Key Pieces of Information Regarding the After Login Page

  • It is the first page a member sees after login
  • It is seen each time a member logs in

They just logged in and are likely looking for information or resources that are relevant to their membership.

Since the After Login page is consistently seen by members, it is recommended to include useful information and links that are “evergreen” and can be used at any time. We get into more details on that below.

Any content, links, or information the member will need to access again or on a regular basis are typically included on the After Login page. Of course, the page often can't contain every piece of content. This is where relevant links to specific areas of the site come in.

What Should Appear on a Member Dashboard Page?

The answer to this question can depend on the type of site. But, there are a few things that usually appear on a member dashboard page.

  • Clear Links. A selection of clearly labelled buttons or links that will direct the member to where they want to go.
  • Account Area. A way for members to access their account and be able to change their email address, password, etc.
  • Any Provided Extras. This may include links to a Bonus section or a Downloads area.
  • Access to Support. The ability to quickly and easily reach out and receive support is important for any membership site.

Note: You may find some of the buttons / links on your member dashboard page will also be included on an welcome page (After Registration page). Or you may have links that only need to appear on the welcome page. More information is available on creating a welcome page.

Member Dashboard Page Example

We have included a screenshot example of a member dashboard page below. It uses a WordPress default theme and includes some minor formatting. Of course, you can use the theme of your choice and can use a page builder if you would like.

With that being said, the page includes a short message to the member and includes links to some common areas they will visit on a regular basis.

You can customize your own member dashboard page to include what your members will want and need.

Revert to Previous Page Settings – Revisions

There may be times when you may want to revert back to content that was previously saved on the page. Perhaps you decide you liked the previous text better or preferred a lay out that was used.

You can use the WordPress Revisions section to revert back to previous save points for the content on the page.

WordPress displays a Revisions area on the right side of the edit page section as displayed in the screenshot below.

You can click to view the Revisions for the page and the Compare Revisions section appears. This WordPress feature allows you to roll back to previous save points. This can be helpful if you want to go back to using a previously saved version of the page.

Note: The slider on the top can be used to display different save points so you can select the revision of your choice.

The revisions will show what has been removed or added and the Restore This Revision button can be used to complete the restoration.

This essentially allows you to roll back to a previously saved version of the page.

welcome - WishList Member

First impressions can be significant as they can set the tone for future interactions.

So it's a good idea to start your members off on the right foot. An ideal way to do that is by welcoming them as soon as they join.

WishList Member includes an After Registration page (typically called the Member Welcome Page).

This means when a member registers for a membership level, they are shown the set After Registration page one time.

There is a basic message applied as the default After Registration page. This is also an opportunity to create a more detailed welcome page for your members. A welcome page does exactly that; it welcomes them to your membership and prepares them for what they can expect.

After Registration Page Overview

As noted, the After Registration page will appear to a member directly after they register and it can only be viewed once.

A Global Default After Registration page can be set or individual After Registration pages can be set for each membership level.

Additional options and settings related to configuring the After Registration page are available in the After Registration Page article.

In this article, we will focus on the type of information you can include on a welcome page when setting it as the After Registration page.

Two Key Pieces of Information Regarding the After Registration Page

  • It is the first page a member sees after registration
  • It can only be seen once by the member

They just decided to join your membership and became a new member a few seconds ago.

They are likely looking forward to digging into their brand new membership and exploring the site.

Since the After Registration page is their first experience as an official member, it is recommended to include some specific and useful information along with a genuine welcome. We get into more details on that below.

It is important to remember the After Registration page only appears to the member once. So any content, links, or information the member will need to access again or on a regular basis should also be included elsewhere on the site. This might include a way to access a bonus or a members only area. That type of content should be easily found at any time.

The After Login page is useful for cases like this as that page appears to the member each time they login moving forward.

What Should Appear on a Welcome Page?

This is a good question to ask and it can depend on the type of site. But, there are a few things that you'll typically find on a welcome page.

  • A genuine welcome. The new members have placed their trust in you and your offer so a sincere “Thank you” and a “Welcome” is always appreciated.
  • What is included in their membership. A brief overview of what they just purchased / joined.
  • Next Steps. Where should the member go now and how can they easily find what they need.

Since the After Registration page only appears to the member once, you may find some of the links you included on the welcome page will also appear on the After Login page (often referred to as a dashboard page). More information is available on creating a dashboard page.

Of course, you can include whatever you would like on the page. You know your members and what they will want to see.

Welcome Page Example

We have included a screenshot example of a welcome page below. It uses a WordPress default theme and includes some minor formatting. Of course, you can use the theme of your choice and can use a page builder if you would like.

With that being said, the page includes a short message to welcome the member and includes links to some areas they might want to check out as a new member.

You can customize your own welcome page to include what your members will want and need.

Revert to Previous Page Settings – Revisions

There may be times when you may want to revert back to content that was previously saved on the page. Perhaps you decide you liked the previous text better or preferred a different lay out that was used.

This essentially allows you to roll back to a previously saved version of the page.

create a sales page - WishList Member

An effective membership sales / offer page is important for a number of reasons. This is the main page users will see when deciding if they will join your membership so it needs to be clear and compelling. You can create and customize your membership sales page when using WishList Member.

You are selling your site and providing an offer to those who are interested. Your offer might have a cost (one time or recurring) or it might be free. Either way, you will want a Sales / Offer page for your site.

That being said, the focus of this article is the methods for adding a purchase / registration option to your page.

You will ultimately have a button or link (or multiple buttons and links) on the page. Something along the lines of “Buy Now” or “Join Now” are often used. “Get Started” is another popular option.

If it's a paid offer, it will be a purchase button or link that will start the purchase / registration process.

If it's a free offer, it will be a registration button or link that will start the registration process.

Sales Page – Paid Offer

WishList Member includes integrations with a large variety of payment providers.

This means you can integrate a membership level with options like PayPal, WooCommerce, Stripe, ThriveCart and many more. You can then accept payment to allow a user to register.

Integrations can be setup in the Setup > Integrations > Payment Providers section of WishList Member.

(More details on setting up an integration with a specific payment provider is available in the Payment Providers section of the WishList Member Knowledge Base)

Once you have integrated your membership level with the payment provider of your choice, you will have a payment button or link.

You can simply insert the payment button / link onto your Sales / Offer page and you're all set.

Anyone who uses that payment button / link to sign up will be a member with the corresponding membership level.

More details on creating a sales page for Paid Users is available right here.

Sales Page – Free Offer

If you are offering a free membership, there are a couple of main options that can be used to allow for registration.

You can use a Registration URL or the Registration shortcode.

In this case, you can insert a button or link on the Sales / Offer page and set it to direct to the Registration URL for the membership level. Anyone who uses that button / link will be sent to a page with a registration form the user can fill out for free.

Or you could insert the Registration shortcode onto a page and that will display the registration form for the membership level. You could then set the button or link on the Sales / Offer page to direct to the page with the Registration shortcode.

Either option will allow the user to register for the membership level for free.

(More details on the two options are available in the Registration URL and Registration shortcode articles in the WishList Member Knowledge Base).

More details on creating a sales page for Free Users is available right here.

Setting your Sales / Offer page as your Non-Members page

Something to consider is setting your Sales page as your Non-Members page.

This is an opportunity to offer those who just attempted to access protected content with the option to join the membership. They showed interest in content that is only available to those in the membership level so providing the option for them to join can lead to a new sign up.

The Non-Members error page will be displayed to Non-Members (users with no membership level assigned to them) if they attempt to access any protected content. It will also be displayed to those who are not logged in if they attempt to access any protected content.

The Non-Members page can be set in the Advanced Options > Global Defaults > Error Pages section of WishList Member. You can click the blue Configure button to set a page.

The Configure Error Page for Non-Members popup will appear and you can select your Sales / Offer page from the list.

Or, you could include a more generic message on the Non-Members page stating the content is for members only and could simply include a link on the bottom of the page that reads:

“Interesting in seeing more? Click Here to join”

That link could then direct to your Sales / Offer page that includes all the details.

The WishList Member Setup Wizard can be used if you are just starting out or if you ever want to go back and make adjustments.

More details are included below (including a Video Tutorial).

Note: You can skip any steps as you run through the Setup Wizard. If you find something isn't needed for your site or you plan to set it up later, you can move right along to the next step. No problem.

You can access the Setup Wizard at any time in the Setup > Getting Started section in WishList Member.

The first step is a short welcome and you can then click the Start button to get rolling.

You have the option of integrating with a payment provider or with an email provider (or both). If you don't need to accept payments or don't need to use an email provider, or want to do this at another time, you can skip this step.

Integrating with a payment provider allows you to accept payments for access to your site while integrating with an email provider allows for another method of contacting and marketing to your members.

If you enable a payment provider or an email provider, you will be able to complete their configuration after the Setup Wizard is complete.

Create Membership Pages

You can select which pages you would like to have created from a list of membership pages. These cover a variety of topics like member login, registration and more. You also have the option to customize any of these pages at any time.

The Membership Registration Page for FREE Users is a page you can use if you would like to allow free access to a membership level. A page is created with a registration form and you can add information describing the membership.

The Membership Sales Page for PAID Users is a page you can use if you would like to accept payments to access a membership level. A page is created with sales copy you can edit to describe your offer and you can add a purchase button/link created when integrating with a payment provider.

The Styled Membership Login Page applies a designed template to the default WordPress login page. This sets the default login page to better match the look and feel of your membership site. You can select from the available templates and make adjustments like adding your own login, setting the colors and more.

The Member Welcome page is often referred to as the After Registration Page. It is seen by the member one time only right after registration. This is an opportunity to welcome the new member and invite them to check out the site.

The Member Dashboard page is often referred to as the After Login Page. It is seen by the member each time they login moving forward. This is a useful area to include links to common sections the member will want to visit.

Congratulations!

You did it! The final step appears as you have run through the WishList Member Setup Wizard. You can now click the Finish button to view the Membership Success Checklist.

WishList Member Setup Wizard

Membership Success Checklist

The Membership Success Checklist appears on the WishList Member dashboard. It displays what you have set up and provides information on potential next steps you can take.

Completing the actions of activating the license key and creating a membership level checks those off the list and adds them to the Finished section.

Other items can be checked off manually by clicking the box beside it. Checking off an item will move it to the Finished section of the checklist.

You can also skip any items that may not apply to your site or that you may want to come back to later. This can be done using the X icon that appears when mousing over an item.

Clicking the X icon to skip the item will place that item in the Skipped section on the bottom of the checklist.

You can also restore any item that has been skipped by using the Restore icon. Restoring an item will place it back into it's corresponding section.

The video tutorial below runs through the WishList Member Setup Wizard and explains each step along the way.
